Windy Daze is an ode to Frankfort, Michigan — a sleepy Midwest surf town I would visit as a kid. My goal was to portray the raw, wind-swept nature of the region and the individuals who venture out and surf through the cold, howling Lake Michigan breeze.
Thinking back to memories on the lake, imagery of brightly colored kites and sails dominate the horizon. I felt particularly inspired by my Dad’s 80’s surf gear along with the expressive type + illustration scattered across his piles and piles of gear. I chose to model my type and illustration around surf culture + advertising from the 70’s and 80’s.
